When it just won't quit
Anyone who has experienced back pain associated with a herniated disc knows that it can be incessant and excruciating. There are a number of ways to treat the pain, though many methods are only temporary or involve a drawn out process of treatments. Other methods of back pain relief, such as open surgery, are more aggressive and efficient, but can be painful and result in a difficult recovery period. An alternative treatment is laser-assisted surgery, percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD). A remarkable outpatient surgery with almost immediate results and minimal downtime, PLDD is a welcome alternative to back pain sufferers. Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate, so patients must carefully explore the option with a specialist before committing to anything.
PLDD is not an option in the following circumstances:
- When pain is caused by bone spurs or arthritis of the spinal joints
- When bone built up in the spinal canal has caused severe spinal stenosis
- When the diagnosis is second or third degree spondylolisthesis
- When the diagnosis is spine cancer
