What
causes a slipped disc?
To understand a slipped disc,
it helps to first understand the spinal cord.
It is made up of connected bones called
vertebrae that are protected by gel-filled
discs located in between each vertebra. The
discs are connected to the bones by tough
ligaments. As the ligaments weaken over time,
and the discs lose their water content, and
thus their
shock-absorbing
abilities, spinal nerves come into danger.
This is when the slipped disc can occur – a
minor strain
can easily
cause shifting and a protrusion of disc material
into the spinal nerves.
Other terms for slipped disc: herniated
disc, bulging
disc, ruptured
disc
